Scheduled Maintenance and Care for Your MGI Landscape
Hardscape Maintenance (Patios, Walkways, Retaining Walls)
The hardscapes we install are built for longevity using durable materials like pavers and natural stone. However, they do require periodic attention to maintain their look and structural integrity.
- Routine Cleaning: Sweep regularly to remove dirt, leaves, and debris. For a deeper clean, use a pressure washer (on a low setting) or a stiff-bristle brush with a mild detergent.
- Weed/Moss Removal: Hardscape joints can harbor weeds and moss. Remove them promptly. For paver joints, reapply joint sand or polymer sand as needed to stabilize the pavers and deter weed growth.
- Sealing: Consider reapplying a quality sealer every few years, especially for colored or natural stone surfaces. Sealing helps protect the material from stains and weathering, keeping the surface looking vibrant.
- Winter Care: When shoveling snow, use a plastic shovel to avoid scraping or chipping the paver surface.
Avoid using rock salt (sodium chloride) directly on stone or pavers, as it can be corrosive; use a designated paver-safe de-icer if necessary.
Outdoor Kitchen and Fireplace Care
Your custom Outdoor Kitchen and Outdoor Fireplace are designed for durability, but the exposed materials and appliances need seasonal and routine upkeep.
Outdoor Kitchens
- Appliance Care: Follow the manufacturer's recommendations for your built-in grill, refrigerator, and other appliances. This usually involves regular cleaning and proper winterization (such as disconnecting gas lines and covering or removing sensitive components).
- Countertops and Surfaces: Clean countertops (e.g., granite, stone, concrete) with non-abrasive cleaners designed for the material. Wipe spills immediately, especially acidic ones like wine or citrus, which can etch the surface.
- Cabinetry: If you have outdoor cabinetry, keep the doors closed and occasionally clean the interiors to prevent pest intrusion.
Outdoor Fireplaces
- Masonry Inspection: Periodically check the stone or brick masonry for any signs of cracking or crumbling mortar, especially after a harsh winter. This helps ensure structural integrity.
- Wood-Burning Units: Regularly remove ash and debris from the firebox to ensure proper airflow and a clean burn. Check the chimney/flue for obstructions.
- Gas Units: Have the gas lines, burner, and ignition system inspected annually by a qualified professional to ensure safe and efficient operation. Always turn off the main gas supply during the off-season.
- Covering: Use a protective, breathable cover during extended periods of non-use, particularly in the winter months, to shield the firebox and exterior from moisture and snow.
Landscape Renovation and Planting Bed Maintenance
The plants, trees, and features from your Landscape Renovation need nurturing to mature beautifully and maintain the original design’s intent.
Consistent watering is crucial, especially for new plantings. Even established plants in North Dakota's climate may require deep watering during dry spells.
Regularly remove weeds from planting beds. Consider applying a pre-emergent herbicide in the spring to help control weed growth, followed by regular hand-pulling.
Watering
Weed Control
Replenish the mulch layer (2-3 inches deep) annually. Mulch helps retain soil moisture, regulates soil temperature, and suppresses weeds, which is critical for plant health.
Pruning and Trimming
Mulching
Prune shrubs and trees at the appropriate time of year to encourage healthy growth and maintain the desired shape and size. Remove dead or damaged branches immediately.
